Questions

Why mask the first eight digits?

A masked citizenship number shows only the last four digits (XXXX XXXX 1234). Organisations can still match it to you, but the full number can't be misused if the copy is lost or shared.

Is the number really removed, or just covered?

Removed. A black box drawn over text in most PDF editors leaves the digits in the file, where anyone can copy them out. This tool turns masked pages into images with the digits painted over, so the original text is gone. Pages without masks keep their selectable text.

Does it work on a scanned citizenship card?

Scans have no text, so the number can't be found automatically, but you can drag over it to mask it yourself.

How does it avoid masking other numbers?

Citizenship numbers include a check digit. The tool masks only 12-digit numbers that pass that check, unless you turn the check off.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The tool runs as code in your browser tab and processes the file on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server, and the site's security policy blocks the page from sending data to any other website. You can check: open your browser's developer tools, watch the Network tab while the tool runs, and you'll see no upload.
