Questions

What's the difference between the two modes?

Text changes compares the words, so it finds edits even if the layout reflowed, and an inserted page doesn't throw off the rest. Visual overlay compares the pages as images, which also catches changes to pictures, signatures and layout.

Can it compare scanned documents?

Visual overlay can, if the scans are aligned the same way. Text changes needs a text layer.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The tool runs as code in your browser tab and processes the file on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server, and the site's security policy blocks the page from sending data to any other website. You can check: open your browser's developer tools, watch the Network tab while the tool runs, and you'll see no upload.
